Why scheduling works

Most cloud estates contain development, test, staging, sandbox and analytics workloads that do not need to run 24 hours a day. The cost model for virtual machines rewards turning resources off when they are not delivering business value, yet many teams leave them running because ownership is unclear or native provider tooling is fragmented.

A simple weekday schedule can remove evenings and weekends from the compute bill. The 30% savings model

The 30% target is realistic when a meaningful share of compute spend is non-production. For example, a VM that runs 168 hours each week but only needs 55 business hours has roughly two thirds of its runtime available for optimization. After excluding databases, shared services and critical exceptions, a portfolio-level 20% to 30% reduction is a credible first milestone.

Savings should be modeled per resource, not as a broad percentage promise. Teams need the current monthly run rate, proposed stop window, timezone, weekend behavior and expected exceptions. This is where a FinOps workflow becomes more useful than a calendar rule alone.

Multi-cloud implementation

AWS, Azure and GCP each provide ways to start and stop virtual machines, but the policy model differs by provider. AWS teams often start with EC2 instance actions and tags. Freeze windows, IaC ownership and ticket requirements should be checked before actions run.
